Claude vs GitHub Copilot in VS Code

I’ve been asked a few times lately which AI tool I’d actually recommend for day-to-day coding work, and honestly the question itself is a bit of a trap. Everyone wants one winner. One tool that does everything, handles every task, earns its subscription fee on its own. And I get it: subscription fatigue is real, and nobody wants to be paying for three things when one should do the job. But the honest answer, at least from where I’m sitting, is that Claude and GitHub Copilot inside VS Code are good at genuinely different things, and the friction starts the moment you try to force either one of them to do the whole job.

I use both. Every single day. And I’ve spent enough time with each now that I can actually feel the tradeoffs, not just read about them in someone else’s benchmark post, but feel them in the middle of actual work.

What Claude Does That Copilot Won’t

When I need to think, really think and not just generate code, Claude is where I go. Planning a new app, working through a product idea, figuring out where a project should go next. That’s Claude territory. There’s something about the way it engages with open-ended problems that Copilot just doesn’t replicate. Copilot inside VS Code wants to break things into smaller, safer chunks. That MVP-style, methodical approach is, genuinely, a good development methodology. But sometimes you don’t want methodical. Sometimes you want creative, and that’s where the gap becomes obvious.

The clearest example I can give is UI design. I was working on a MotoGP fantasy league app, something fun the wife and I threw together, and I was completely stuck on the front end. I knew what I wanted it to feel like but couldn’t get it there. I gave Claude carte blanche: here’s the vision, here’s what it needs to do, go make it better. What came back was exactly what I’d been chasing. Not a cautious patch. A proper redesign that felt right. Copilot, in the same situation, would have offered me a tidy, conservative set of changes, and I’d still be staring at a UI that was close but not quite.

Claude has also just launched Claude Design, which I haven’t had the chance to properly sit with yet, but from what I’ve seen it looks like a natural extension of that same creative strength, absolutely worth having a play with if you haven’t already.

What Copilot Does That Claude Won’t

Here’s where I’ll be just as direct in the other direction: when it comes to structured coding work and code review, Copilot inside VS Code is the better tool for me. Full stop.

The thing that genuinely impresses me is how good it is at finding issues in existing code: security gaps, refactoring opportunities, things that slipped through because the instruction to another tool was just “implement this feature” and nothing broader. Claude Code, in my experience, tends to do exactly what you’ve asked and not much more. You say go build this, it builds this. It rarely pauses to say “hey, whilst I’m here I noticed this bug two files over, want me to fix it?” Copilot, especially when you pair it with the OWASP Top 10 instruction set from the awesome-copilot project, which is basically a set of best-practice security guidelines baked into the agent’s instructions, will go through code and nitpick. It finds places where security risks have crept in, recommends refactors, cleans things up. That kind of disciplined review is genuinely hard to get Claude to replicate in the same way.

So what I’ve ended up doing is running the two together. Claude for the design and creative thinking phase: what is this product, where is it going, what should the UI feel like. Then Copilot to implement, following its own methodical chunk-by-chunk approach, with the OWASP instructions making sure everything lands on the right side of secure. They’re not competing. They’re complementary, and it took me a little while to stop treating it like a competition and start treating it like a stack.

The Cost Reality (and Why It Actually Makes Sense)

I’m on Claude Pro Max, somewhere around 160 Australian dollars a month and Copilot Pro+, which is closer to 40 Australian. So the total is roughly 200 bucks a month on AI tooling. That’s not nothing. My accountant would absolutely have opinions about that line item.

But here’s where I’ve landed on it: the cost gap only looks unreasonable if you expect them to be doing the same job. If Claude were just a fancier autocomplete and Copilot were just a chatbot, paying 160 for the chatbot would be absurd. The reason the gap makes sense, at least to me, is that Claude at that tier genuinely changes how I approach creative and planning work. I’d previously been on a cheaper Claude plan and was hitting limits constantly. Upgraded, stopped hitting limits, and the value unlocked pretty quickly.

Copilot is the opposite story: the plan is generous, the barrier to entry is low, and it’s already sitting inside VS Code which you’re probably using anyway. That’s worth a lot. There’s no context-switching, no separate window, no mental overhead of deciding when to open a different tool. It’s just there.

This also brings up something I’ve had to watch: subscription creep. It’s easy to end up signed up for Gemini, Claude, Codex, and a few others before you realise you’re paying for half of them and not getting the value. The honest answer most of the time is that you can probably get what you need from the tools you already have. Is Codex going to do something meaningfully better than Copilot for this specific task? Probably not enough to justify another subscription. Worth consolidating before you add.

And that brings me to what I’d actually tell someone who’s just starting out.

Where I’d Point a Beginner

I get this question more than you’d think, from people at work, from friends, from the SQL developer I spent half an hour with recently getting set up. And the answer I keep coming back to is: start with Copilot inside VS Code.

Not because it’s better. It isn’t, across the board. But because it meets people where they already are. If you’re a developer or aspiring developer, you’re probably already in VS Code. Copilot installs as an extension and integrates into what you’re already doing with almost no friction. The cost is manageable. The learning curve is small. And the part I actually care about most: it keeps you closer to the code.

I sat with my friend, ran him through how I use these tools, how I decide which one to reach for on a given day. By the end of the afternoon he’d pushed out a React app and refactored some existing repos he’d been sitting on for months. That doesn’t happen with a tool that requires a whole new mental model to get started. The seamlessness of Copilot inside VS Code is a real advantage for someone building their AI-assisted workflow from scratch.

Once you’re comfortable there, once you’ve got a feel for how these tools think and where they push back, then adding Claude into the mix makes more sense. But starting with Claude Code before you’ve got the foundation sorted is like trying to run a complicated playbook before you know the sport. You’ll get output, but you might not know what to do with it, or whether it’s actually right.

Where the Workflow Actually Breaks

The failure mode I see most often with Copilot is scope creep, and I’ve absolutely fallen into this hole myself. You ask it to do two or three things, it does them, and then it says “the natural next steps here would be X, Y, and Z.” And sometimes that’s a genuinely useful recommendation. But sometimes you look up two hours later, having followed three rounds of “natural next steps”, and you’re deep in a rabbit hole implementing features the app didn’t need, accumulating tech debt before you’ve even shipped a first version.

It’s a subtle thing but it matters. The tool is being helpful, technically. But helpful-and-chatty can break flow just as badly as slow-and-shallow. I’ve learned to read those “here’s what we should do next” suggestions more critically now. Sometimes the answer is yes, good catch. Sometimes the answer is no, I know what I’m actually building here.

That failure mode is worth knowing about. The awareness of it changes how you engage with the suggestions. These are tools, genuinely powerful ones, but still tools. The actual skill, the one that doesn’t get automated away, is knowing which one to reach for and why.

My own stack will keep shifting as these products evolve. New models drop, pricing changes, capabilities expand. But for now: Claude for creative and planning work, Copilot for structured coding and review. That’s where I’ve settled, and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.
